Alfred's Dinner : Chicken Rice

Something that many tourists come to Singapore for, the Hainanese Chicken Rice is something I have never enjoyed eating. For me, the Hainanese Chicken Rice will forever pales in comparison with Roasted Chicken Rice when placed side by side. I mean the chicken skin is something really delicious when roasted but to boil or steam?

When people tells me that , "Oh this Hainanese Chicken Rice, you must try!", I would go like, "Oh really? Ok I'll try!". Boy after trying, it always left me wondering whether is it my taste bud or their taste bud having problems. The thing is what is so nice about a piece of white chicken skin? And even if it is nice and I want to eat, what's so difficult about making it at home? I mean all you need is a pot of water to boil or steam right? Ok, perhaps a galic/ginger or 2 to give it a bit more flavour.

Well I've never liked steamed chicken. The fact is there is nothing special in that skin and usually if it blends well with the rice, it's more likely the magic of the sauce that is poured over the chicken.

Come to think of it, my mum does make a lot of steamed chicken frequently, well I know for a fact that elders usually love this dish a lot. I'm the type of person who doesn't tells my mum what I don't like to see on the table hence everytime she made steamed chicken, I would just try to eat it but of course I'll remove the skin. The result is just like eating Roasted Chicken Rice but without the roasted skin or like eating Char Kuay Teow without cockles.

So I was made to forget about all good food tonight as my mum decided that we're having steamed chicken. Plus the fact that we had prawn noodles last night, I thought this healthy food is the best thing in the world to balance that high cholesterol meal.

I'm scared of chicken rice already. Cause there are more than 3 chicken rice stalls in my area...

I am not scared by mere of their existence. But I would be scared of eating if I eat it everyday. No of stalls how near or far to me has no consequence as long I don't eat it.

I do agree with you that Hainanese Chicken Rice is over-rated.

I guess some people like it a lot not just because of the chicken, but the chilli and the rice play an important part when it comes to the overall taste.

I am never a fan of chicken rice anyway. :)
